We all know about the amazing health booster green tea, and we all know that it has been acknowledged for its health and weight loss benefits for a very long time. And, of course, we're not going to deny it here - green tea is definitely one of the healthiest drinks you can treat your body with, and there's evidence for it too.

But it really feels like we might be overlooking something. Surely, green tea can't be the only tea with a dozen benefits, right? Maybe there's even something better out there!

So, I'm about to present a tea to you, that has been in the shadows for long enough: Rooibos tea (aka Red tea).

    RED IS THE NEW GREEN

Red tea has been around for hundreds of years, when Khoisans, a South African tribe, started drinking it on a regular basis. In the late 1700's it was finally discovered by some Europeans and started rising in popularity around the entire world. Although it still took quite some time for people to accept it - it was only when Japan started to market rooibos as an anti-ageing product in the early 1980's red rooibos tea really began to shine internationally.

    #1 RARE ANTIOXIDANTS

Both red and green tea contain a high amount of antioxidants, which, for example, helps people regulate their allergy problems. But antioxidants aren't always sourced from the same places, it depends on the plant. The antioxidants in green tea help lower the rist of becoming some types of cancer, like breast cancer or prostate cancer. A cup of green tea a day may also help decreasing the chances of getting other diseases, such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. So, as you can see, green tea has quite a lot to offer when it comes to living a long and healthy life. But what has red tea to offer?

Well, the antioxidants in red rooibos tea are pretty hard to find in other plants and teas, which makes this tea pretty special. These antioxidants help regulate your blood sugar, stress level and even reduce excessive fat production. When it comes to losing weight, red tea is definitely in the lead and, in my opinion, vital. It's a natural fat killer and supporter of your metabolic system. Of course, you won't magically lose all weight just by drinking red tea, but it sure is a huge support in your weight loss journey and definitely shouldn't be ignored.

    #2 WEIGHT LOSS QUEEN

And this leads me to my second point, which is weight loss. Green tea (with caffein) helps you lose weight by raising your metabolic rate and improving your insulin activity. Red tea does about the same thing and even a little more:

High fasting glucose levels is common in obesity, and red tea helps regulating these levels, which in return makes you lose some pounds. The red bush also contain the bioflavonoid Aspalathin, which helps to reduce stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage - so by drinking a cup of red tea in the morning before breakfast, you will probably not eat as much during the day as you used to.

    #3 NATURAL SWEETENER

Most of us are guilty when it comes to filling our cup of tea or coffee with loads of sugar, honey or milk - or all three! And I don't need to tell you that this, of course, increases the fat and sugar percentage in your cup tremendously, making your tea or coffee not so healthy anymore.

If you're like me and you'd rather enjoy your drink sweet, then red tea might be perfect for you! The african drink is naturally sweet already, making it much easier not to add any other unhealthy sweeteners. And you might think this isn't that much of a benefit compared to green tea. But when you consider that more than half of all americans prefer their tea or coffee sweetened, it's kind of nice to drink your tea thinking in the back of your head that you're not drinking ANY calories or fat. You can lose up to 14 lb a year just by not adding sugar to your tea or coffee! But that doesn't mean you have to give up on that delicious taste of sweetened drinks.
